this movie is genuinely one of my favourites (only beaten by The Mummy!). it actually UNDERSTOOD what the source materials vibes were trying to do!! we HAD a "dark universe" and then fucking Tom Cruise ruined it.

@@BetterWithBob That's totally fair... I am unfairly biased against Tom Cruise just because I dislike him. 😂 But he did take the premise of The Mummy and make it all about him. I was just going to add to my original comment that Richard Roxburgh absolutely EATS every scene he's in. And I can quote not only the actual script of the movie but even the entire commentary 😂 at some point I only had access to dvds of The Mummy, Van Helsing and a very obscure British sitcom called Coupling. The world before streaming exhaustion was very different haha

Brilliant detailed analysis. Thank you. Depicting the significance of this amazing film at the time: post World War 2 , US / Japanse relations - political back drop of Civil Rights movement and racial politics. Just wished Joshua Logan was bolder and had cast a Japanese actor in the male role, instead of Mexican actor, Ricardo Montalban - the casting almost undoes the intentions of the director's vision. However, it is not as bad as Micky Rooney in Breakfast At Tiffany's!! Thank goodness Audrey Hepburn turned down the central role Japanese female role. Totally agree Myosi Umeki does a good job of an unwritten part. She is fantastic as is Red Buttons, they work together so well. A great film, headed by a strong lead actor , probably one of Brando's last best roles before his demise of mainly thrashy roles and films in the 60's before his legendary comeback with The Godfather.

I think it was just my headcanon but I always thought Aleera and Anna were connected somehow. The way she seems particularly catty with her, her playfulness, even the sexual innuendo of them. I always thought perhaps the two had been friends and Aleera had been taken as a bride in the recent past and her behavior with Anna was the normal hyperbisexuality of a vampire. A callback to Lucy becoming a little more sexual and flirty with Mina even in the modern adaptations.

Alyssa was always the problem. She couldn't handle not being the star behind the scenes, we all watched because of Shannon Doherty(RIP) and her star power. That coupled with the fact that Shannon and Holly had been good friends for years made her feel outnumbered. And it was Phoebe's selfishness that cost Prue to lose her life. So, no Phoebe wasn't well liked until season 5, she was hated by the end of season 3. And season 4 is the absolute worst, the sister's barely have any power and their reliance on Cole is way too much.

I regret having missed seeing this in theaters when it first came out!!! I was 12 and thought that I was getting too old for "animated kids films." Then in 2022, on the film's 25th anniversary, I watched it for the first time (someone uploaded it to YT, so I watched it for free)... and automatically fell in LOVE with it!!! Next time it comes back to the big screen, I SWEAR I won't miss it!!! Apart from Disney, Don Bluth was for me the only other big name in animation whose movies in my very early childhood during the 90's were like dreams come true. THE LAND BEFORE TIME is my Top Favorite Film of his and in my Top 💯 Favorite Films of All Time, but THE SECRET OF NIMH is close behind and ANASTASIA comes a very respectable 3rd - all three films are in my Top 15 Animated Films of All Time! Even ROCK A DOODLE is a guilty pleasure. What I love most about ANASTASIA - and Don Bluth's work in general - is how he goes for a darker, edgier, more adult vibe even when he's clearly following the Disney mold. I always admire when certain animated films and their creators go their own way instead of directly imitating a giant, not only in format & styles but also appealing to more than kids, which is especially true for animated adult film favorites of mine like AKIRA, THE PRINCE OF EGYPT (which I strongly prefer to THE TEN COMMANDMENTS), WATERSHIP DOWN, FANTASTIC PLANET, HEAVY METAL, THE WIND RISES and FIRE AND ICE. The characters and situations here are relatable to both children and adults - if you pardon the talking animals and supernatural elements, which are still taken very seriously - the animation styles, the music, the voice talent, the visual depictions of the Bolshevik Revolution and Roaring 20's Paris (Roaring 20's going centennial, baby!!!), even the technical ambitions like shooting using actual CinemaScope lenses (2.55:1) for the first time in decades!!! That, and elements of David Lean's DOCTOR ZHIVAGO (which I first saw on the big screen in 2003 screened from a 65mm negative during a summer filmmaking course for high school students at NC-School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, where I made my first short film) and Lerner & Lowes musicals thrown in for more than just good measure! (Just as a side note, I also missed seeing TITANIC in theaters in '97, but managed to see it for the first time back on the big screen from a 65mm negative at NC-School of the Arts during 2003 - unsurprisingly, the only teenage boy among a handful of girls studying under the same department & others during the arts summer program for high school students.) And yeah, I know it's historically inaccurate - confound it all, I love it though!!! Personally, "In the Dark of the Night" is my favorite evil villain song (how can you NOT love a evil villain song that has the lyric "Terror's the LEAST I can do!"?). Even "Once Upon A December" has become a Christmas favorite - they play the instrumental version as part of the accompanying music at the annual Winter Lights exhibit every November to December at the NC Arboretum here in my hometown of Asheville, North Carolina!!!

Calling 'Troy' 'commercial' & lowbrow, then progressing to the dull, predictable shit-pile of 'Inglourious Basterds' (with 'Django Unchained', Tarantino's two worst films, though 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' is Tarantino, and Pitt, at their best), suggests Pitt has little interest in history or mythology, & was unknowingly portraying a sulking meta-version of Achilles over being forced into a film project due to contractual obligations... much like the Suitor's Pact that drew Achilles into Agamemnon's siege of Troy. And then of course, you've got the injured Achilles tendon, and the destruction of film sets due to the rage of Greek Gods being cut from the script. It's a shame Pitt couldn't see it was a role he was fated for, & not merely feted for.

It sucks that Tiana was an animal for a majority of her movie regardless of her good, albeit pretty stereotypical and predictable, character traits and attributes (she's a "hard worker" and "a good cook"). She has more, but those are the biggest 2 people always reference when they talk about why they like her or why she's good or different from the other princess archetypes. I can look past her being poor, overworked (the girl literally didn't sleep hopping between 2 separate jobs everyday having no time for socializing and friends), and even having to face classism and racism (while living in the jim crow deep south in the 1920s), but they at least could have had the wherewithal to keep her a full human being for her story because her actual character design was beautiful. It was just disappointing. And I know a lot of people were underwhelmed since she was the first Black princess. Many were on the fence because they were happy to just have a princess who looks like them even though they weren't thrilled she was an animal most of the film, so they were conflicted. The voice acting and music were definitely a high point of the movie.

I meeeaaan have your opinion, but that is a crazy statement-- just because the title is a token to the character who is based on a REAL person, doesn't make the story acceptable. You are not Native American, nor am I. Pocahontas is the only Disney princess movie that I first saw as a teenager and didn't grow up with; I completely missed it growing up in rural Australia. It is well known that white people (born in the country that displaced the titular character and her people) made the inappropriate romeo-and-juliet-eque story,. Just look up who wrote the screen play, and watch the movie to see how the character of John Smith and plot is unapologetically colonial through out... I had a yucky feeling watching it, even before the abominable sequel, which (if you are a fan of the original) I understand that you wouldn't want it being associated with the first story, but honey.... the first is also pretty bad. If it were about an alien race, like Avatar (that you referenced), OR a fantasy race, like in Fern Gully, then it's it's social commentary, but don't mistake the use of an actual abused historical figure, and a gentle take on Western Colonialism, as being a strong Disney story. You can think it is strong, and maybe I'm so shocked you think the characters and plot are so worthy, because I thought the movie as whole was weak at best, with poor sidekicks and musical numbers- apart from Colors of the Wind, which I had heard before watching... so I expected the movie to be far better in it's terrible plot and morale.

I loved the 1994's Little Women, and I read the book, today one of my favorites, because of that version. Unfortunately, I hated Greta Gerwig version, because of these reasons: 1 - the "non-linear" estructure of the script, that alternates between the present and the past. This option turned the story more tiring and difficult to watch. 2 - the way that she intensified the rivaltry between Amy and Jo, that originally only occurred in that episode of the manuscript when they were teens. 3 - the changes that she did on the Profesor Bhaer, one of my favorite characters of the story. Not only she turned him french instead of german, but she altered the scene where he criticized the sensacionalistic tales that she wrotes, making his behavior more agressive and intolerant (at the book, he only said to her that was bad literature, without give her any glance that he was suspicious of what she was writing). And I suspect that these changes were proposital, to make the spectators of the story antipathize him and accept her end to the story, where Jo was alone and published her book with a "false end", where Jo is married with Profesor Bhaer and teaching at Plumfield with him. I'm really worried with the possibility of what she will do when she will direct "Narnia" or what she inserted at the script of the live action of Snow White. Based on that she did before, the possibilities to the future aren't much positives.
